Bringing together a county, state and federal partnership, breaking a 30-year long logjam

To bring together three levels of government which operated on different fiscal and planning calendars to achieve what had seemed impossible for the past 30 years would be a daunting task - one that bordered on impossible without considerable public support. But how do you generate a major chance in public understanding of a problem that was just a mile off the beach yet virtually no one in the local community had heard about it, much less seen it? Engaging the media was the most efficient and cost effective way to achieve the broadest awareness in the least amount of time.

William Nuckols, Principal, W.H. Nuckols Consulting, lead a local/state/federal multi-agency communication team to draw the media's initial interest and then to ensure that the stories being told were high quality, the b-roll and interview opportunities were of highest quality, and that initial round of media continued to result in additional media coverage in the region, nationally and internationally. He also served as the project spokesperson for interviews for domestic and international media stories.

The project successfully brought together multiple portions of Broward County, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the U.S. Navy Expeditionary Combat Command, the U.S. Army Dive Company and transportation units operating Army watercraft, the U.S. Coast Guard, NOAA, Coastal America, and others to successfully recover thousands of tires from the sea floor and recycle them to provide energy for South Florida residents.
