H2-B Immigration Policy Issues

2007 Video
or

As changes in our domestic labor force have evolved over time, the need for immigrant workers to supplement our domestic workforce has been a crucial component of a viable domestic seafood industry.

2006 Recap: With the help of several key members of Congress including Senator Barbara Mikulski, Senator John Warner and Congressman Wayne Gilchrest (to name just a few), an amendment vote to add a 2 year provision that allows existing employers and immigrant workers who follow the law to continue to bring this important supply into the U.S passed.
With a winning vote of 94-6 in the US Senate we were able to demonstrate overwhelming bipartisian support for this issue.

Next steps include seeking a permanent solution for the employers and workers who utilize the H2-B labor program.

Hurricane Katrina and Rita Fisheries Disaster Relief

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries have indicated that there will be over a billion dollars of losses to the fisheries in Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard, Plaquemines, St. Tammany and lower Lafourche parishes alone. Impacts to the three state region will likely exceed this number greatly.

Efforts are underway to support federal fisheries disaster relief through private donations and securing federal appropriations.

Marine Debris can impact trawling practices. Unmapped debris from the hurricanes can result in damage to fishing gear. Severe entanglement can result in the loss of gear and poses a safety hazzard to vessels and their crews.
